The Epiphone
Dot
The Story of the Christmas Dot...
I got a Dot this Christmas - What's a Dot - Glad you asked. The Epiphone Dot is an archtop
electric guitar made by Epiphone a company owned by Gibson. It is almost identical to the Gibson ES-335.
Mine is a standard Dot but there are other models like the Dot Studio
and Dot Deluxe that have a variety of hardware and finishes. The Dot is a semi-hollow body and with Alnico
Humbucker pickups the Dot achieves a warm and clear tone. Its construction offers a lot of sustain as well,
which makes it capable of being a singing lead guitar, unlike the Epiphone Casino, which lends itself more to
rhythm. (see John Lennon Casino)
Semi hollow body guitars also known as semi acoustic or semi solid
guitars are a breed of electric guitars that offer the best of both worlds. They were created
especially for players who wanted the resonance of a hollow body while having the feedback resistance and bite of
the solid body guitars. As it has a solid block of wood running through the center with hollow body "wings"
on both sides. The result is what is now popularly known as the Semi-hollow body guitars.
Although electric guitars derive a lot of their sound
quality from their electronics, the construction of the guitar 's body is still very important. The way sound
resonates through the body of the guitar will determine whether it produces a warm, solid tone or a hollow
one. As common sense might dictate, a solid-body electric guitar will produce a stronger more solid
tone than a hollow-body guitar. Although some people do like the thinner sound that comes from a hollow body
guitar - enter the Epiphone Dot, a versatile instrument appropriate for beginners and veteran guitarists
alike.
With few exceptions, Epiphones are now built only in the Qingdao
factory in China under the strict control of Gibson/Epiphone.
Quality and craftsmanship are equal to guitars costing "a lot"
more. Frets and intonation are perfect. The neck has a heftier shape yet, plays effortlessly. The
Dot sustains wonderfully, stays in tune, and the Humbucker pickups provide a wide tonal range. Electronics
and hardware are trustworthy. The Dot is truly a joy - I LOVE mine.
It looks just like the Gibson ES-335. From a distance or on
stage people can’t seem to tell the difference and people tell me it sounds the same too. It’s got a really
meaty sound, which I didn’t expect. I know its not a Gibson but remember we are in a recession
and at around $300 to 400 the Epiphone DOT is amongst the cheapest of the Epiphone Arch top range. Add
to this the 3 fantastic original finishes of Cherry, Vintage Sunburst and Natural they also now make an ebony
version, so here’s to the recession-busting Epiphone.
One of the first things you will notice is the DOT inlays on the Fret
board from which comes the name, simple yet very classy. The pickups are 2 classic 57 Humbuckers and the body
is made from laminated maple and is thinner than standard acoustic guitars but still allows hollow-body like
resonance while being lighter than a solid-body. The Humbuckers tame the feedback issues that are seen at
higher volumes, along with the bite and sustain of a solid body.
The Epiphone Dot Electric Guitar will give you buckets of deep, rich,
full sound. The classic semi-hollowbody design with dual Humbuckers and 3-way pickup selector delivers
everything from growling snarls to sweet, singing sustain. Equipped with 2 volume and 2 tone controls the Dot
lets you tailor your tones to fit your style Jazz to Beatles to Metal, the Dot can do it all. It has a silky
smooth, lightning-fast 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and a stopbar tailpiece for
more sustain and makes string changing easier. If you're lusting for a Gibson ES-335, but can't swing the
budget-crunching price, the Epiphone Dot is for you.
The Epiphone Dot is about a tenth of the price of Gibson's Classic
ES-335 Memphis Series Dot, but it is in no way a tenth of the quality. For many players the Epiphone's
semi-hollowbody electrics are some of the best deals on the guitar market today.
Be careful if you are buying your first guitar online are a
whole lot of bad guitars going for very cheap, and I mean BAD! I've seen the low price deals on
eBay. DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE GUITARS! I searched all over the web and always came back to
zZounds and they were true to their word - my Dot arrived on time and in great shape - "It was even in
tune!!" I could not have been more satisfied.
See my Epiphone Dot and the Classic Gibson ES-335, my Dot cost about $399 and the Gibson costs $2,749, To this Baby
Boomer who loves to play old Beatle tunes the choice was clear GET A DOT if you are like me and not a
professional but just want to look and sound like one. (One Day...)
